Lecture No. 08 – Basic Medical Sciences 1

Anatomy (Chapter 05 – Respiratory System, Page 21-22)

Physiology (Chapter 03 – Cardiovascular System, Page 92-94)

Medical students preparing for exams under Punjab Medical Faculty know how important Basic Medical Sciences 1 is. Every chapter builds the foundation for clinical understanding, and without clear concepts, it becomes difficult to score good marks in exams.

In this detailed lecture, we cover two very important systems of the human body:

  • Anatomy – Respiratory System (Page 21-22)
  • Physiology – Cardiovascular System (Page 92-94)

This blog provides a complete overview of the lecture content along with information about the PDF that includes handwritten notes, MCQs, and short questions for exam preparation.

📘 Anatomy – Chapter 05

Respiratory System (Page 21-22)

The respiratory system is one of the most essential systems of the human body. It is responsible for breathing and gas exchange. Without oxygen, our cells cannot produce energy, and life cannot continue.

🔹 Main Functions of Respiratory System

  1. Intake of oxygen
  2. Removal of carbon dioxide
  3. Maintenance of blood pH
  4. Voice production
  5. Protection against infections

🔹 Parts of the Respiratory System

The respiratory system is divided into two main parts:

1️⃣ Upper Respiratory Tract

  • Nose
  • Nasal cavity
  • Pharynx
  • Larynx

These parts help in filtering, warming, and moistening the air before it enters the lungs.

2️⃣ Lower Respiratory Tract

  • Trachea
  • Bronchi
  • Bronchioles
  • Lungs
  • Alveoli

The lungs are the main organs of respiration. Inside the lungs, millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli help in gas exchange.

🔬 Mechanism of Breathing

Breathing has two phases:

✔ Inspiration (Inhalation)

  • Diaphragm contracts
  • Chest cavity expands
  • Air enters lungs

✔ Expiration (Exhalation)

  • Diaphragm relaxes
  • Chest cavity decreases
  • Air leaves lungs

This process is automatic and controlled by the respiratory center in the brain.

🩺 Clinical Importance

Understanding the respiratory system helps students understand diseases such as:

  • Asthma
  • Pneumonia
  • Tuberculosis
  • Chronic bronchitis

These diseases are commonly discussed in medical exams conducted by Punjab Medical Faculty.

📗 Physiology – Chapter 03

Cardiovascular System (Page 92-94)

The cardiovascular system works closely with the respiratory system. While the lungs provide oxygen, the cardiovascular system transports it throughout the body.

🔹 Main Components of Cardiovascular System

  1. Heart
  2. Blood
  3. Blood vessels

❤️ The Heart

The heart is a muscular organ located in the chest. It has four chambers:

  • Right atrium
  • Right ventricle
  • Left atrium
  • Left ventricle

The heart pumps blood continuously throughout life.

🔄 Blood Circulation

There are two main types of circulation:

1️⃣ Pulmonary Circulation

Blood goes from heart to lungs and back to heart.

2️⃣ Systemic Circulation

Blood goes from heart to body and back to heart.

This system ensures that every cell receives oxygen and nutrients.

🩸 Blood Vessels

There are three main types:

  • Arteries – Carry blood away from heart
  • Veins – Carry blood toward heart
  • Capillaries – Exchange nutrients and gases

🔗 Connection Between Respiratory & Cardiovascular System

These two systems work together:

  • Respiratory system provides oxygen
  • Cardiovascular system transports oxygen
  • Carbon dioxide is carried back to lungs

This coordination is extremely important for maintaining life.
